The mascot horror film is directed by Dan Allen, and puts ahorror spin on theBambistory.

He believes that it is far too extreme to call mascot horror films like this “childhood killers.”

I genuinely think that, in many ways, these adaptations are more faithful than the Disney films.

Bambi: The Reckoning poster from the Twisted Childhood Universe.

Probably not with Winnie The Pooh, but in terms of Peter Pan and Bambi.

They are actually pretty dark stories!

Disney made them much more palatable and friendly to young audiences.

Bambi in the shadows in Bambi The Reckoning

Bambi: The Reckoning is a modern fantasy horror film from director Dan Allen and the team behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Xana and her Son Benji are involved in a car accident that puts them in the crosshairs of Bambi, a furious deer with insatiable bloodlust.

There was recently a horror version developed calledPeter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare.

This came after a wave of horror films, including the wildly successfulWinnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honeyand its sequel.

Allen is right to point out, however, that the source material often has pretty dark themes.

Even the originalBambimovie sees the titular fawn experience the death of his mother, who a hunter kills.

This forces the young animal to experience a harsh truth and grow up quickly.

He exempts themovieBlood and Honeyfrom being a more faithful adaptation ofWinnie-the-Poohthan its animated predecessors.

This is likely becauseWinnie-the-Pooh, as a book, was originally aimed at young audiences in the first place.

The other texts, by contrast, featured young characters, but very adult themes.

This makes horror films likeBambi: The Reckoningmore faithful than something like the Steamboat Willie horror filmScreamboat.
