The only way to stop Pan was forRumpelstiltskin to sacrifice himself.
So thats what he did.
His sacrifice was themost noble and heroic thing audiences had ever seen Rumpelstiltskin do.
It was the price of magic that was required for Pans death.
This means that Rumpelstiltskins return to the show paints the question of why Pan didnt return too.
Pan eventually returned for three episodes in season five of the show, as well as a voice-over appearance.

When he was defeated in season 5, it was a lot easier than the first time around.
This happened with both Emma andHook when they became Dark Ones.
