It adds an emotional core to the story.
From a more practical standpoint, Kings death also facilitates more than half the movies runtime.
Had he called Christian on his own, he could have easily laid out everything he knew.
Having him work with Medina also establishes character arcs that will surely carry into the next sequel.
The death of Raymond King is an absolute tragedy, but it ultimately works wonders for the sequels storytelling.
