2003sThe Curse of the Black Pearlwas an unlikely hit.

However, althoughthePirates of the Caribbeansequelswere box office successes, the franchises critical acclaim was short-lived.

Part of the reason for this was the byzantine plotting of the original movies follow-ups.

Elizabeth Swann, Captain Jack, and Barbossa from POTC

This came to a head in 2007sAt Worlds End, the final movie of the original trilogy.

This outing brought together the Brethren Court, an international coterie of Pirate Lords.

Moreover, even the scenes where Barbossa works outside the Caribbean dont take place anywhere near the Caspian Sea.

ThePirates of the Caribbeanmovies haveplenty of Barbossa plot holes, but this is one of the most egregious.

He did become captain after staging a mutiny, but this only complicated things further.
