House
The creator ofHouse,David Shore, gave a recent revival update that promises to protect the legacy of the series twelve years after it ended.Shore’s medical procedural following a genius, but unconventional doctor has remained in the zeitgeistdespite the fact that it has been more than a decade since its finale.
As a result, many have hoped for thereturn of Hugh Laurie’s Dr. House, especially as the recent trend of revivals continues to extend several stories beyond their initial endings.
Shore’s recent interview withEntertainment Weeklydid allow for that hope to continue, but the revival may not be what audiences expect.Shore talked about many aspects of the show to celebrate its 20th anniversary, discussing everything from House’s constant lupus diagnosis to popular audience theories to his sadness at not having Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) in the finale.
However, when it came to a possibleHouserevival, Shore seemed reluctant to mess with its memory, which could mean that the show’s ending will remain untouched.
David Shore’s Reluctance To Make A House Revival Means The Show’s Ending Will Be Protected
Shore Discussed How He Would Not Want To Spoil House’s Legacy
Shore’s focus on the impactHousehas on audiences and his desire to preserve it means that should a revival ever be green-lit, the show’s ending will be preserved.
When asked if he had ever considered making a special reunion episode, Shore responded that he had not given it much thought.According to Shore, it would be fun, but he would not want to spoil the legacy of the show, and that the circumstances, such as a strong story and clear schedules, would have to happen before any sort of revival could occur.
Not only would a House reboot be very difficult to pull off given how the show ended, but it would also have to address a bittersweet storyline.
Throughout the interview, Shore emphasized his joy at bothHouse’s series finaleand the fact that audiences continue to speculate on it.
This means that any possible revival would have to take that into account and honor the memory of the series by leaving Dr. House’s story alone.
House is a medical mystery drama in which the villain is typically a difficult-to-diagnose medical malady. It follows Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie), a world-renowned disabled diagnostician with a notorious substance abuse issue. With his team of world-class doctors, House has built a reputation as one of the most brilliant doctors in the world - an especially impressive feat when taking into account that he rarely actually sees his patients.
Many revivals feel that they need the original characters, but several of those successful series left little room to check in years later, undercutting the finality of those stories.Leaving Dr. House alone would keep that legacy intact, but aHouserevival could still work without him if the series continues.
How A House Revival Might Actually Work (Without Hurting The Show’s Legacy)
A House Reboot Would Need To Focus On The Original’s Themes
A revival ofHousemight be able to work without hurting the show’s impact if the focus is placed more on carrying on the themes rather than the individual stories from the original show.Housebecame one of the most influentialTV shows in the early 2000sdue to its study of the difficulties of balancing accurate medical diagnosis and compassionate care. These themes, alongside the series' focus on helping others and the obstacles therein, are what should be carried into a rebootas a new character fills Dr. House’s shoes.
Either way, aHouserevival would find success by focusing on the essence of the original story over simply extending one part of it.
One possibility is to focus on Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer), who was set up to be a potential successor to Dr. House.
He could return to the series and attempt to implement some of Dr. House’s methods, allowing him to deal with similar and different struggles than his mentor.
Another possibility is to focus on a new character who studied Dr. House’s methods, giving audiences a new cast to follow while still exploring these themes.
