She needs to play an important role in the overall story to avoid Martha’s fate.
However,Donna was much more belovedthan Martha.
So, since Donna was the main companion in season 4, Martha became an increasingly peripheral presence.
Martha also returned for the season 4 finale.
Marthas presence in these two episodes, despite almost destroying the Earth, still felt unsatisfying to watch.
