Some might believe thatthe implication behind this moment is that the butterfly is a representation of Barnes. The butterfly implies to Paxton (and the audience) that the afterlife exists, justifying their faith. Did Barnes Come Back To Life In Heretic’s Ending? Of course, there is a darker possibility that is similar to certain interpretations of the butterfly....

Once the duo give a shot to leave Reeds home, things take a dark, unexpected turn. Paxton uncovers Reeds deceptions and realizes his supernatural powers were mere trickery, summoning the courage to stab him. A dying Reed attempts to kill Paxton, but Barnes uses her last strength to kill him. Her prayers are seemingly answered when Barnes returns to life for long enough to kill Reed and save her. Once outside,a butterfly lands on Sister Paxtons hand for a brief moment before seemingly disappearing....
